Immediately, #BTR made adjustments to implement social distancing but make sure that teens worldwide could still access books, each other and phenomenal experiences through books and the Internet. |

things get real: from class project to academic movement

September, 2018 - Some things just make sense. #BrownTeensRead Reading Awareness Project started as an assignment for a Business English class. But, as the students shuffled along, their teacher detected a problem: many teens of color admit that they do not read, and even more disheartening, do not like to read! It was making our project difficult because in order to develop their project, they needed to read in order to gather research and statistics. But, they just did not like reading.
After consulting with other English teachers, delmetria, or ms. d., learned that teens across the board do not like reading! Tragic! So, to address that problem, she created a solution! #BrownTeensRead! While many of our initial concepts for the project remain the same, our focus has bent toward getting teens to read more, and to get educators to be more culturally responsive when choosing reading material for their English classes.
Now, as advocates for a balanced narrative of teens who do love reading and writing, we aim to appeal to more teens of color to read and write, not just for the classroom, but for their own enjoyment!
